Hinton: A Railroad Town with Scenic Splendor

Historic Railroad Museum and Train Depot

Begin your adventure in Hinton, a town steeped in railroad history. The Historic Railroad Museum, provides a fascinating glimpse into the golden age of railroads. Here, you can explore exhibits filled with artifacts, photographs, and stories that highlight the significance of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in the region.

Don’t forget to take a short walk down to the restored depot, a beautiful piece of architecture, evoking a bygone era. Today, this depot is still operation and serves Amtrak customers.

Just a short drive from Hinton, Sandstone Falls is a must-see natural wonder. The largest waterfall on the New River, Sandstone Falls spans over 1,500 feet. It’s a great spot to take a break, soak in the views, and commemorate your visit to this beautiful part of the state.

Lost World Caverns

As you head north to Lewisburg, make a stop at the Lost World Caverns. These subterranean marvels were discovered in 1942 and feature a series of stunning formations, including stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone. You may choose to go self-guided which provides a relaxing walk through the caverns, but there is more than meets the eye. Paid guided tours provide an educational and awe-inspiring experience, taking you through the cavern’s history and geological significance, as well as, a spelunking experience over and through some rocky and tight spaces to explore 1.25 miles of caverns.

North House Museum

In the heart of Lewisburg, the North House Museum offers a glimpse into the region’s past. This Federal-style house, built in 1820, now serves as the headquarters for the Greenbrier Historical Society. The museum’s exhibits cover a wide range of topics, from early pioneer life to the Civil War, providing a comprehensive look at the area’s history.

Hawks Nest State Park Overlook

For breathtaking vistas, head to Hawks Nest State Park. The overlook here provides panoramic views of the New River Gorge, one of the most scenic spots in the area. We made a quick decision to stop by this overlook on our way to Hinton, and we are glad we did. Just a short walk to the overlook will provide you with a bird’s eye view of Sandstone Falls. It was quite a surprise.

This national park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering world-class whitewater rafting, rock climbing, and hiking. The Endless Wall Trail and Long Point Trail are two popular hikes that provide incredible views of the gorge and the iconic New River Gorge Bridge.

Cliffside Trail and Other Notable Hikes

For those seeking more hiking adventures, the Cliffside Trail is a fantastic option. Located near the New River, this trail offers a moderate hike with rewarding views of the river and surrounding cliffs. Another notable hike is the Glade Creek Trail, which follows an old railroad grade and features picturesque scenery, including waterfalls and lush forested areas.

Nestled in a scenic area, this RV park may not offer the most luxurious amenities, but you won’t be disappointed with the views you get. Its location makes it an ideal base for exploring both Hinton and Lewisburg, as well as the surrounding natural attractions.

At the time of our visit, the price was near $300 for a weekly rate. Just be aware that there is no person at the campground to check you in, so bring cash to pay for your spot when you arrive.
